OK, I don’t want to be shitty to the people who are protest-not-voting-at-all (unless you’re in a swing state, in which case get over yourself), but I do want someone to tell me a credible answer to this question: if you’re/they’re “sending a message” about genocide, or whatever, how do you possibly expect that message to be teased out of all the others? The democrats violently suck at common sense.
Do you really think they’re going to be like “ah, well, fuck, it turns out we lost 3% of the black vote due to our tacit support for shitty thinly veiled republican racist bills that we figured were worth it for that weird nevada infrastructure compromise; and we totally misread the AIPAC influence by 73% and actually the script flipped since we settled into our political calculus in 1987, we should really take a good long hard look at who our coalition is now, and jesus christ, look at how much those zoomers care about bike lanes! if we’d just alienated 375,000 more boomers, we could’ve racked up 675,009 more Zs! we should totally reconsider the info we were getting from, like, i dunno, green majority wisconsin or whoever our friend is today, etc., etc.”
They ALWAYS draw the wrong conclusions, and their data is shit, and you can’t disambiguate from a single signal anyway, and yes you should shit all over them and elect good people grass roots who give a fuck and aren’t part of the machine, and NOW is the time to give to those vanishingly few candidates to build for next go-round, whether they’re (D) or (I) or whatever, but that time will have passed in a month, and THEN all of the potential messages you send will be mildly counterproductive at best for a willfully ignorant, tepid, cowardly set of organizations that will be focused on finding a dumb middle ground to activate the already lost voter, to persuade the unpersuadable with a stupid message that hasn’t been relevant for 5 years, and to put out dumb ads on the wrong channels. Do your activism now with money. Do your door knocking and persuading through groups that do NOT suck for the next few months. Then suck it up and realize that it is too late to “send a message”, and you’re right that the dems are irredeemable, and it’s always the “most important election of our lifetime”, and yes that’s stupid, but we can’t do anything about that particular stupid, and withholding your votes won’t send that message, and worse, will be interpreted as “huh, we really need to reach out to white working class centrists more in indiana about compromising on border security” - you know in your heart this is right and they will fuck it up! - and just distastefully fucking vote for the genocidal geriatric sleepy maniac who can’t get over his love of long prison sentences and still seeks comity in the senate and loves lindsay graham occasionally - but the Joe Biden one who might not appoint his kids to murder trans teens, which will also be kinda important in 2025 for regrouping and maybe even fixing some stuff despite joementum in the opposite direction.
