Death of Myanmar refugee in Buffalo ruled a homicide by authorities

Medical examiners have ruled that the death of a nearly blind refugee from Myanmar, five days after Border Patrol left him at a Buffalo, New York, doughnut shop, was a homicide. The finding from the Erie County Medical Examiner’s Office was released Wednesday. The agency didn’t reach any conclusions about responsibility for Nurul Amin Shah Alam’s death. Medical examiners said it was caused by complications of a perforated duodenal ulcer, precipitated by hypothermia and dehydration. U.S. Customs and Border Protection says Shah Alam “showed no signs of distress, mobility issues, or disabilities requiring special assistance” when agents dropped him off Feb. 19 at a Tim Hortons restaurant.

SAY NO TO THE 287(g) AGREEMENT 📍 Location: Lake County Sherrif Department 📅 Date & Time: April 9th 9:45-10:45 ✊ Hosted by: Like Minded in Lake County WHY WE’RE GATHERING Our local sheriff has signed a 287(g) agreement with Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) — a deal that allows local deputies to act as immigration agents, detaining people on ICE’s behalf. This partnership sows fear in our community, invites racial profiling, and diverts local resources away from real public safety. WHY COMMISSIONERS MATTER Your County Commissioners hold vital authority in local government. They oversee county budgets, approve contracts, and set policy priorities that affect all residents. In many counties, commissioners can challenge or block unauthorized agreements—including 287(g) contracts made by sheriffs who overstep their legal authority. Commissioners can also pass resolutions that reflect our community’s values and reaffirm that our tax dollars should not fund ICE collaboration. When we show up together, we remind them that they answer to the people, not federal immigration enforcement. WHAT YOU CAN DO 🌻 Bring signs, your voice, and your neighbors. 🗣️ Speak during public comment or stand in solidarity. 📧 Write or call the commissioners before the meeting—ask them to oppose the 287(g) program. OUR MESSAGE We want a county that leads with compassion, not fear. We want our local law enforcement focused on community safety—not federal immigration raids. Join us at the Commissioners Office and demand: An end to the 287(g) agreement Transparency and accountability in local law enforcement Protection for all our neighbors, regardless of immigration status When people come together to defend their community’s values, they shape the future of local government. What value do you think your community most needs to stand up for right now — safety, dignity, or unity?

East Windsor, NJ: Public Hearing on QTS Data Center · Mobilize

**The East Windsor Planning Board is holding another public hearing on the plan for a 272,000 square foot data center proposed for Princeton-Hightstown Road.** Data centers like this one emit noise and pollution while using up tremendous amounts of water and electricity. The proposed plan would also include a 27,000 square foot utility substation, which carries its own environmental risks. The Planning Board will open up the meeting to the public, and anyone who is concerned about the project will get to speak and ask questions. **If we mobilize enough opposition, we can stop these bad data center plans.** That's why it's so important for everyone to show up and, if possible, speak up during the public comment portion of the meeting.

The East Greenwich Planning and Zoning Board is **considering a proposal to build a data center in the Mount Royal section of town**, a residentially-zoned area. The project, submitted by American Tower Corporation, would place a *17,000 square foot unmanned data center* on a six-acre lot at 114 Mantua Road, immediately adjacent to the Oak Ridge housing development. Data centers and warehouses are not listed as permitted uses in residential areas in East Greenwich. While specifics of the plan are still unknown, data centers use enormous amounts of electricity and water. This particular project would be sited next to Mantua Creek, a tributary of the Delaware River. At this point, the company will be seeking preliminary and final major site plan approval, as well as a conditional use. **Now is the time for community members and allies across South Jersey to speak out and make our voices heard!** We don't want data centers in our towns, draining our resources, endangering our water supply, and contributing to air and noise pollution. **Come out to the East Greenwich Planning and Zoning Board meeting on April 21 and tell the Board: NO data center in East Greenwich!**
