@etp We all have our approaches. I wouldn't claim mine is any better. I just thought someone might find it helpful if I shared it.
I put my bottom bracket down the priority list for the reason you mention and because it's a bigger job to fettle.
I don't skimp on bottom brackets and, so far, using high quality, serviceable ones has served me well. No issues from any of them since I installed them.
If you're interested, I use Hope bottom brackets (and hubs and headsets).
