Afghanistan and Kazakhstan
On the Path to Economic Convergence
(Hurriyat, Monday, 6 Muharram 1448)
Countries safeguard their relations with one another through political considerations and economic benefits. In the world today, states’ foreign policies are being shaped by economic interests. It is these very economic necessities that bind countries together and direct relationships towards openness and stability.
Afghanistan possesses significant opportunities for economic integration at the regional level. This position has attracted the attention of many nations. Recently, a high-ranking delegation led by the Deputy Prime Minister and National Economy Minister of Kazakhstan visited Kabul carrying important messages regarding trade, investment, transit, and economic cooperation. It appears both sides desire to see their economic interests realized through proximity.
A crucial aspect is the planned increase in merchandise trade volume from $500 million to $3 billion, which will significantly enhance commercial interactions between the two countries and cultivate new hopes for Afghanistan in terms of exports, investment, and job creation. Similarly, the opening of a pharmaceutical sales branch by Kazakhstan in Kabul, and the establishment of a chamber of commerce, are also important advancements.
Alongside this, the provision of banking facilities, the opening of accounts, and the expansion of financial cooperation are other areas of significant value for trade development. Until financial and banking obstacles diminish, achieving ambitious goals in trade will be problematic. Therefore, the actions undertaken between the two countries represent a favorable step towards the practical implementation of economic cooperation.
Kazakhstan has also expressed eagerness for collaboration in transit, mining, chemical fertilizer production, and the railway network sector. These areas could transform Afghanistan into an important regional hub for economic connection, particularly through the planned railway projects in Mazar-i-Sharif, Herat, Kandahar, and Spin Boldak, which would greatly enhance Afghanistan’s transit value.
In recent years, Afghanistan has striven to broaden its economic ties with the region and reinforce interactions based on mutual benefit. Kazakhstan’s latest actions and high-level visits demonstrate that regional countries view Afghanistan as an important economic partner and seek to share in existing opportunities.
Now, it is essential that agreements reached between the two countries are implemented according to a defined timeline. Banking facilities must be expanded, and the private sector should be encouraged for joint ventures. In this way, economic commitments will translate into tangible achievements.
The Islamic Emirate also needs to take maximum advantage of these opportunities. Further facilitate trade, investment, and transit; increase support for the private sector; and pursue continuous efforts to advance its economic reforms. The more development is given to economic cooperation, the stronger Afghanistan will be in the regional economic arena.
This convergence in collaboration between Afghanistan and Kazakhstan is moving steadily toward increasing economic participation. Under these circumstances, Afghanistan can leverage its geographic location and natural resources to transform itself into an important nexus for economic cooperation, but this goal will be better achieved when the opportunities created are manifested not only in agreements but also through practical application on the ground.
