You need NEITHER a BOX nor HAY. Nor is it a "fuss" -- no time for fuss! A foam block to stand pan on makes a good firm insulating base. Tuck the pan in well with kitchen or other towels.

Starchy stuff like rice, pasta lends itself well, as there's no heat x time degradable nutrients in it, if you don't mix with finer things at this stage.

Solar PV elec for a kettle, pour over item, bring-up to boil if nec., cover. Forget. Till hungry. You get back to it, it's either ready to eat or needs short boost. More of the former when you get used to it.

Haybox cooking involves placing a hot pot of food in a nest of hay and leaving it there to complete cooking. It's efficient and convenient - so it's not surprising its making a comeback.
