Half-Earth Socialism: The Game

Play as a planetary planner and decide what we should do about the climate, biodiversity, and human welfare. Can you bring the world safely to a better place?

Half-Earth Socialism

Opportunities for #HalfEarth and indigenous comanaged #MarineProtectedAreas: The project was funded by the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration’s Office of Law Enforcement, which hopes to use information about where salmon are concentrated at sea to help curb illegal fishing. The centralized database will be housed by the North Pacific Anadromous Fish Commission and made publicly available.

Huge database gives insight into salmon patterns at sea - Alaska Native News

A massive new analysis of high seas salmon surveys is enhancing the understanding of salmon ecology, adding details about where various species congregate in the North Pacific Ocean and their different temperature tolerances. The project, led by researchers at the University of Alaska Fairbanks, integrates numerous international salmon studies from the North Pacific dating back to the […]

Half Earth Socialism : planification écosocialiste contre technocratie verte ? | Terrestres

"The problem is...people live and work on these lands. #Communities have to see a benefit in regrowing and maintaining lost #forests...this is, again, developed #Western #nations asking the least developed communities to shoulder the weight of their past [and barely abated] #ecological damage...every #community [has] different needs and...challenges."

Poor planning for coming #Climate impacts! The result is a concrete sprawl of buildings, roads and other infrastructure.
“China’s rapid urbanization has led to a proliferation of #impermeable surfaces,” he says. “Green spaces such as #parks and gardens play a vital role in water retention. Their dwindling presence due to #urbanization diminishes their capacity to effectively manage excessive rainfall.”

How Beijing’s deadly floods could be avoided

The floods that have swept China in the past week were exacerbated by poor planning for drainage.

#halfearth idea: a #conservation idea that half is conservation, other half is humans. Not only politically dubious (#refugees) but also ecologically, because species need #freemovement.

San Bruno Mountain Watch: The #park and its #habitat nearly had a different fate. In the late ’60s, #developers had plans to flatten the top of the #mountain, create a #neighborhood, use the excavated rocks to fill the #Bay and create a city the size of Manhattan with the #landfill Cherbowsky Corkidi said.

Butterflies a plenty at San Bruno Mountain

Now is the time to see the growing numbers of the mission blue butterfly, which has a home on San Bruno Mountain because of activists who worked to stave off

Mount Alto House is a restored 1843 farmhouse with a large, comfortable addition sitting on a ridge overlooking the James River above Howardsville in Southern Albemarle County, Virginia. The view is extraordinary. Across the James. Across Buckingham County. Willis Mountain, 30 miles away, a sleeping giant, at the border of Cumberland County.

It’s a big sky. Spiritual, even.

And it’s a small farm. 9 acres. Family+ sized. We restored the house and then we regenerated the land. Organic practices. Soil building. Regeneration. Biodiversity. Water conservation. Carbon and nitrogen sinking. Building resilience and mitigation for and against climate change. In a beautiful place. Consilience at work.

I’m seeking new stewards for this beautiful place. Traveling projects are calling me. Another project similar to this one. Another healing enterprise.

Check out the website. Please share. Let me know if you have any questions. Thank you!

#COP15 This idea is so old - in the British Empire the magic number was 25%, a universal target for forest reservation without queuring whether it made ecological sense locally; always so much about colonial control over land

#HalfEarth; rooted in equally problematic anti-people thinking.

Biodiversity & rewilding so important but so is justice, what regions are protected, who is excluded.

Why 30x30 would be the worst possible outcome of COP15 | African Arguments

The plan at COP15 to turn 30% of the earth into Protected Areas is based on an deeply unscientific and racist logic.

African Arguments
In one example, scientists experiment with and ultimately enact an initiative to refreeze parts of Antarctica. In another example, the ‘#HalfEarth project’, humans are moved out of great swathes of the Earth, which are then devoted to animal corridors... (8/20)
