Green River:
🎵 This Town

🌿🪨 Nature’s puzzle solved!
For 150 years, geologists puzzled over Utah’s Green River: it flows “uphill” through the Uinta Mountains despite being younger than the rock.
New research reveals the river was first, with the mountains rising slowly around it, allowing the river to erode downward while the land lifted upward. A beautiful example of patient geologic dance.

"When the #GreenRiver carved through the #Uinta Mountains, it fundamentally changed the landscape of #NorthAmerica. Rather than flowing eastwards into the Mississippi, it became a tributary of the Colorado River, and its waters were redirected to the Pacific.
This rerouting altered the continental divide, the line that divides North American river systems that flow into the Atlantic from those that flow into the Pacific. In doing so, it created new boundaries and connections for wildlife and ecosystems.
The story of the Green River shows that processes deep within the Earth can have profound impacts for life on the surface."

Geologists may have solved mystery of Green River's 'uphill' route
https://phys.org/news/2026-01-geologists-mystery-green-river-uphill.html
New research may have solved an American mystery which has baffled geologists for a century and a half: How did a river carve a path through a mountain in one of the country's most iconic landscapes? Scientists have long sought an answer to this question of how the Green River, the largest tributary of the Colorado River, managed to create a 700-meter-deep canyon through Utah's 4km-high Uinta Mountains instead of simply flowing around them. The question is particularly confounding because, while the Uinta Mountains are 50 million years old, the Green River has been following this route for less than 8 million years.

👉 Tohle je často považováno za vůbec první grunge nahrávku v historii. Vyšlo to přesně v tomto období před 40 lety. Špinavý zvuk ze Seattlu pro nejkratší den v roce.

(Edit: The highlighted area in the map on that page seems misleading / way too small, or there's a distinction which isn't clear to me. The text suggests a much larger area, as does a National Weather Service post on X.)
