Spotify is removing the Viral 50 chart to prevent manipulation: “Prioritizing the Viral Hits playlist, selected by editors based on popularity parameters.”

An important change for one of the most important music platforms, Spotify. As reported by Billboard, which interviewed the company’s spokesperson: “Spotify has decided to discontinue its Viral Charts as part of a continued commitment to focus on features that best reflect how listeners consume music today. Users can still continue to discover trending tracks through Spotify’s main charts and editorial playlists, including the Viral Hits playlist.”

What will happen? Spotify will now redirect its users to the platform’s main charts and the “Viral Hits” playlist, which has over 8.3 million followers. This move is not accidental: unlike the viral charts, generated by algorithms and therefore potentially subject to manipulation, Spotify exerts direct editorial control on “Viral Hits.”

A distinction that takes on particular relevance in light of what Billboard highlighted: “In recent months, numerous tracks created with the aid of artificial intelligence had managed to infiltrate those automated charts, raising questions about the transparency and integrity of the music trend detection system.”
