IT IS DONE. After confirming that all my old #abandonware games can run on it, I've replaced #windows10 on my 2021 #gpdwinmax with a full install of #bazzite.
I have slayed the #microsoft beast.
Still making progress with my quest to slay #windows10 on my #gpdwinmax and fully switch to #bazzite. It seems I've hit a bit of a snag with one PC game, #evildeadregeneration. The furthest I can get is trying it through #lutris and loading a new game. It just hangs on that screen.
Anyone have any ideas for settings that could help or point me to a guide on getting it to work? I know there is a PS2 version I can just run using PCSX2, which would certainly be much easier; just wondering if anyone knows if it's even possible to run the PC version outside the #windows eco system? #retrogaming #retropcgaming #pcgaming #linux
Making more progress on the #endof10 #windows10 purge with the goal of a full #bazzite-only #gpdwinmax. I have a few #windows PC games working with just some #wine based help. A few others worked with #lutris. I even used the "non-steam game" install option for #Starcraft2 on #steam with great results.
Time to shrink the non- #linux partion and grow the Linux one again!

So I sort of did the half measure with my #endof10 conundrum, and kept the #windows10 install (air gapped) on my 2015 #asus laptop and made it a #dualboot with #ubuntu. The main plan is to keep it for ripping my DVD collection to then drop on my #plex server, as well as basic stuff when I want a normal sized laptop to work on instead of my little #gpdwinmax.
I got a bit distracted when I saw #openra within the app store. I even got the ISOs for the original #redalert games so I could use the music and cutscenes. #eagames , don't @ me since I have the re-released discs AND #commandandconquer The First Decade.
I may only keep the Windows 10 install for certain old PC games that I still have physical discs for, since it has no GPU it can mainly only run old stuff anyways. Unless I can find a way to run it on the Ubuntu side? Or maybe I need to distro hop, assuming i can keep a good DVD ripping option? Or run some kind of Windows 10 #vm within it? At least it's no longer an internet-connected EOS OS.
Now, what to do with that previously mentioned GPD Win Max 2021? It seems like #linux compatability with the hardware may not be great, so maybe the air gapped method is going to be the best course of action?
I just want an excuse to kill off #windows from all my home stuff forever. Easier said than done...
Little time left to figure out what to do about #windows10eol on some of my laptops. I have a ASUS laptop from 2015 that I upgraded the HDD to an SSD drive and from 4GB of RAM to 16, so it still runs well.
It's my last working Windows system with a DVD/RW drive in it. I'm looking to get back into ripping DVDs to put on my #plex server (which will need a storage upgrade, since it sits in an old Gateway All-In-One that used to host Windows 8, now the latest version of Ubuntu but still has the original 500GB HDD, not nearly enough storage for a media server these days, lol), but I'm not too familiar with Linux software that would play nice with those plans.
I may consider a dual-boot while keeping the Windows side air-gapped. No, I'm not paying Microsoft to keep security updates (or using MS points; how do you even get those? Nevermind, I don't care.) Of course, it's not able to run Windows 11, I don't want that anyways. I'm looking to get away from Windows as much as possible (if only I could avoid it at work as well...).
Then, there is my #gpdwinmax 2021. I've mostly moved on to my ASUS ROG ALLY for my handheld PC gaming needs, but the Win Max is still good for anything that's more keyboard heavy. Not sure if #steamos would be a good option (or possible on this hardware), since I like running a lot of old PC games (80's-90's). I know Linux gaming has certainly improved by leaps and bounds within recent years, but it seems like it's still behind when it comes to #retropcgaming, so I'm a bit wary on fully converting to Linux. Maybe I should just keep it as Windows 10 but air gapped? Or maybe a dual boot is a good idea to at least try on this one too?
Typing out these thoughts is making me think the dual boot idea might be best; I can always canibalize the Windows partition down the line if I can truly break free.
Seems like a quick search makes it look like installing anything other than Windows on the GPD Win Max is a bit iffy. Maybe just an air gapped machine for that one then?
