ACOSS just dropped the mic on gas giants: time for a proper 25% levy on exports, not some weak temporary windfall tax. These multinationals have been getting our gas basically for free, raking in $100b+ windfall profits from global crises while Aussies cop skyrocketing fuel bills, a housing emergency, and shredded social supports.
$17b a year could actually fund energy rebates, proper income support, housing, health, and renewables — instead of subsidising fossil fuel exec bonuses. Even One Nation and some Libs are open to it. The Albanese government should listen to ACOSS, the unions, the Greens, and the overwhelming majority of Australians. Tax the gas barons, help people doing it toughest. No more free ride for foreign multinationals on our resources.
