How come my email was given as the recovery email by a company I don't know?
Either Google or that company messed up.
Yesterday, when I opened Gmail in Firefox on Linux, I found myself logged out of my Google account.
In place of Gmail was a landing page extolling the virtues of Gemini in Gmail and providing prominent options only for signing up or creating a new account. I managed to follow a less prominent option to just sign into Gmail. I dont know how but, although I ended up in the account recovery flow rather than the login flow, I still managed to sign in.
Tech giants are throwing every dark pattern at forcing AI. This is known, no surprise here. But there's something else I don't understand.
In addition to my Google account I found myself logged out of all my accounts on unrelated sites I was signed into from Firefox, even in multi-account containers. Even non Google sites with no Google account or Gmail address in the credentials. How did they do that?
I've been making the switch from #gmail over to #protonmail today. It's nice that it was easier because I'm using the #FirefoxRelay for pretty much all my accounts + my own custom domain.
Nice and easy to import everything from Google as well and set up mail forwarding to Proton from Google, to update any miscellaneous emails that come into my actual Gmail address.

Security experts have warned that victims could easily fall for the scam if they're not vigilant. Cybersecurity experts have issued a stark warning to 1.8billion Gmail users after a new scam began to gain traction which could lead to a total loss of their accounts. Researchers at Malwarebytes Labs urged users to be on their guard, after they discovered a malicious website that mimicked the official Google security tool, which is typically used to keep accounts secure.
Pet peeve of the day: the #Google #gmail configuration pane to send mail through an authenticated connection to an SMTP server and conflates #TLS and #SSL in misleading ways. In this UI there are two selectors:
1) "Secured connection using SSL (recommended)"
2) "Secured connection using TLS"
What these actually mean:
1) "Secured connection using TLS"
2) "Secured connection over cleartext SMTP that is then upgraded to TLS with STARTTLS"
Nowhere does long-dead "SSL" come into play. (I just really hate it when TLS gets called "SSL", especially when here there is an option for "TLS" which means something different entirely.)
