I've been buying fruit trees because finally I'm not renting and I can live that dream. I was just thinking about how's it's an odd buying experience, though.

For a normal experience, you could go to a local nursery or hardware store and get trees with no info about their strain, or expected output, or eventual height, or foibles, or root stock.

Or: you could mail order trees with full info... Except for knowing when the tree will ship. You buy a tree AND a strenuous four hour job at some random point in the future! And if you fuck it up with ADHD or life intervening, and you don't do your random heavy labor in time, and the tree dies, you get to buy the experience again next year!

At the nursery . . . a lovely apple blossom . . .

First plum blossom spotted in MY garden, tho not the same tree.

(That Cherry Plum is covered in fat buds about to burst..)

Give it a few days, full bloom is likely exactly 3 weeks earlier than last year's (Apr 1st)

A small but meaningful milestone today — I repotted my Pink Lady apple seedling (Malus domestica 'Pink Lady') into a bigger pot to give its roots more room to grow. 🌱 The seed came straight from a Pink Lady I was eating — too good not to try! Apple seeds don't grow true to the parent, so this little tree will likely produce something entirely its own. It might take years before it ever flowers or fruits, but that's exactly what makes growing from seed so exciting.

If you're interested in #FruitTree #grafting #HandsOn #education, see info below.

Learn the basic skill and knowledge you need to start grafting and graft your own heritage apple tree to take home!

This #workshop will describe the reasons for grafting, when to graft, and when to collect budwood. The workshop will be hands on and participants will be introduced to tree terminology, grafting tools and materials, and will be shown various grafting techniques. Participants will get the chance to practice their new skills on spare branches and once confident, do an actual graft. Each participant will be able to choose an apple variety from the heratige collection at Welland Orchard to graft on to a dwarfing rootstock, to create a new apple tree to take home.

All tools and materials will be provided.

Be sure to come dressed for the elements as this workshop will be held outdoors.

Fruit tree people of Mastodon: Call for research participation!

I'm currently compiling a scholarly research project on how different cities handle urban fruit trees: growing, gleaning, maintenance, and regulation. This is in service of doing more food sovereignty and climate work better, and learning from each other in a streamlined way.

I know there's a solid community of growers here at minimum, and I'd love to talk with anyone who's:

1) Growing fruit trees and has insights on what's surprising or difficult about them;
2) Involved in food forests or public urban orchards;
3) Involved in urban gleaning projects;
4) Has something interesting to say on this topic that you think I have not covered here.

If you're interested, I would love to hear from you, and thank you all in advance for considering.

Here is a picture of the 110 lbs of cherries I picked last summer off one (1) downtown backyard tree for posting this on a Sunday.
