Yesterday I started lifting this year's garlic crop at the allotment. I think the variety is early purple, planted back in October last year. I gave the plants some protection from the worst of the winter weather but this was not strictly necessary. Garlic is ready when the tops turn yellow and start to bend over.
We also picked gooseberries and radishes.

May is the busiest month of the year in the greenhouse. Now, at the end of the month, the propagators have been put away and most of the tender plants have disappeared. The recent hot weather has enabled me to plant these out or get on with putting them into window boxes, hanging-baskets and planters.
What remains are mainly tomatoes, peppers, chillies and cucumbers; these are nearly ready to go into their final containers.

This is is my monthly view up the allotment for the end of April. The potatoes are starting to come through, some with a catch-crop of radishes and salad leaves between the rows. Most of the onions grown in the greenhouse from seed have been planted. There's not much room left for the leeks, which are nearly ready to go in. Broad beans and peas are taking off on the far side. The Bramley apple tree is in full bloom.

This is my monthly peep into the greenhouse for the end of March. All the over-wintered plants have been potted-on and the sowing season is well underway despite the indifferent weather; (we had 'wintry showers' on Tuesday and Wednesday). Veg like broad beans, peas, onions and leeks are growing well, as are annuals like cosmos and sunflowers. Seeds of tender annuals, tomatoes and peppes are germinating nicely in the propagators.

I was disappointed to find that there hadn't been much in the way of growth with the garlic in a week, and as the hole had enlarged (Fox? Paw prints for sure) I decided to do away with the fleece. To try to discourage further investigation I strung some rotten string across the bed #allotmentgardening #vegetablegrowing #kent #england

This is my monthly view up the allotment for the end of February - a bit late, I know.
A large patch has been cleared ready for potato planting later in March if the weather stays mild and reasonably dry.
The smoke is coming from my burner. New allotment rules stipulate that bonfires must be contained, so I'm using an old washing machine drum to burn prunings etc.
The garlic has survived the winter very well under the protection of the plastic cloches.

Started my sowing at the weekend. It's odd. Every year I am determined not to grow anything other than the essentials - vegetables and a few annuals. And every year I end up with a planting list as long as my arm. Does this sound familiar???
