The Sinhala language also (see last post) used to contain more Pāli words, but has drifted back in the direction of Sanskrit, which is intimately tied to Hinduism, because Sanskrit is viewed as a prestigious language. For example, Sinhala says vidarśanā instead of vipassanā.

Teacup formality is a part of etiquette, but an infinitesimal part. How about fast-food informality? That is as much a part of etiquette as the teacup. It is all of our behavior and not simply the formal occasion behavior. And, in fact, the more informal the circumstances, usually the more you need etiquette.

It can be difficult to deal with the difference in #formality between #English and #French. With students, I therefore suggest we use first names in English, and first name + “vous” in French, which seems to me the closest approximation in formality.

Any thoughts by native speakers of either language? (University context.)

#Formality

Dear John,

I am writing to you about formal writing.

In a formally written message, you open by saying the person's name with a greeting, and below that, you summarize the contents of the message.

After you've written what you need to write, you write some form of goodbye, and then write your name.

Sincerely,

Émilie Fecteau
