I might end up using Chezmoi, which is another thing I used years ago but for some reason stopped using -- again, probably because something annoyed me about it, I don't recall precisely what.
I will sort all this out eventually.
Ideally I'll have two dotfiles repos: one for my workstation/laptop, and the other for server stuff.
"Never repeat yourself" and idempotency are going to be tricky because my servers are a plucky band of misfits and weirdos running various different Unix-like operating systems.
