Hey #HiveMind / #AskFedi,

Following up to an earlier question, can anyone tell me if they've gotten visual voicemail reliably working on any #FOSS #Android dialer program (or dedicated FOSS vVM program, if such a thing exists)?

It doesn't have to be your OS'es stock dialer, but it has to be a FOSS one. Not "Google Dialer" or "${cellular_carrier} Visual Voicemail."

It would work like 10% of the time when I was with AT&T, but now not at all with Mint Mobile (T-Mobile #MVNO).

Maybe I should make it into a #Poll to get more interest ;)

Yes, I've gotten vVM to work with FOSS Android
No, I could never get it to work reliably
I don't use FOSS Android (stock Android or iOS)

@rl_dane I don't use voicemail, but provider voicemail was very buggy here last time i checked. The only decent solution i've seen was mailing an mp3

@rl_dane So, I used to get visual voicemail working without problems on GrapheneOS via the AOSP stock dialer (not google), but a little less than a year ago it stopped working consistently. Around that time I had switched cell plans Verizon -> Verizon, so I suppose that may have caused the issue.

I do also remember hearing lots of reports around that time that visual voicemail was broken on FOSS android dialers and ROMs, so maybe I was just lucky when I had first set it up.

@Seize

Annoying, but sounds about right.

I found instructions that said you have to go into a secret baseband menu, perform an exotic dance, and maybe sacrifice a chicken, and if you're able to perform those steps to get call forwarding working from within the phone settings screen, then visual voicemail will also magically start working.

Uuuuugh. XD

@rl_dane the ritual in question
