My long-due #introduction. I spent 15 years using #twitter, only to learn recently that the nice conversations were here in #mastodon after all.

I now teach operating and distributed systems at #feup in #Portugal. My research has been focused on causality, complex systems, high availability, and data management. I helped create these unpronounceable #crdts that are becoming a basic tool of the modern internet. Recently, I have been venturing into topics of more general interest and writing for blogs@acm.

As a hobby, like many others, I am fascinated by the fast advances of #chatGPT and other LLMs. I keep wondering how these tools can be adapted to yet unseen uses. In my spare time, I also collect mechanical calculators, levitate #magnets and play spaceship games.
