For #TextureTuesday some more WIP snapshots of STRATA, a generative system I've been on/off working on since 2014 (in Clojure/TypeScript/Zig, originally for the cover design of HOLO magazine), loosely based on 1950s research/experiments by Barricelli, somewhat related to cellular automata and extended to use a different and much larger set of "reproduction/collision rules" for (often) more complex outcomes. It's a hard system to tweak and curate, but I'm still in love with the resulting structures/textures (reminiscent of thin section petrography), so I keep returning to it every now and then...

Unlike the recently shared[1] multi-cellular struggles, these here are some selected research stills (handpicked from tens of thousands) of only single CA configurations (aka mono-cultures) which I found interesting/promising and which were then used as raw ingredients/candidates for my infinitely evolving C-SCAPE project[2]...

Each of these cellular automata is 1.5D, meaning each pixel row is one generation, but I allowed the neighborhoods to be flexible, larger (potentially discontinuous), and in some cases extended to enable access to cell states in previous generations (i.e. a form of temporal short term memory). This leads to all sorts of much more interesting and complex outcomes than "traditional" (aka textbook) 1-dimensional CA setups...

Quanta Magazine's latest opus dives into the age-old mystery of when nature decided to turn up the saturation slider. 🎨🤔 Spoiler alert: It was probably before your last existential crisis over kaleidoscopic Instagram filters. 📱🌈

When Did Nature Burst Into Vivid Color? | Quanta Magazine

Scientists reconstructed 500 million years of evolutionary history to reveal which came first: colorful signals or the color vision needed to see them.

Passively participating in #Genuary2024 — Day 9 ASCII. In summer 2022 I released ASCII-SCAPE, a textmode remix of my earlier C-SCAPE co-evolving multi-cellular automata simulation piece. Technially, it should been called UTF-SCAPE, but hey (some variations actually are strictly ASCII only).

The piece uses 1200+ handpicked rule combinations (based on custom rules & neighborhood configurations I generated/searched/collected/curated with my own tools over the past 20+ years), 32 character sets, 40 color themes, all creating literally billions of possible combinations... The piece also allows recording & exporting chunks of the simulation as plain text files (just press X to start/end recording)

(Reload for new random combination!)

The following keyboard shortcuts are available:

- space : toggle simulation updates (pause/play)
- r : randomize environment
- x : start/stop recording
- f : toggle scroll speed (fast/slow)

#genuary2023 Black & White. Some WIP snapshots of last year's C-SCAPE co-evolving 1D #CellularAutomata #GenerativeArt project...

Realtime versions:
https://art.thi.ng/c-scape

Co-evolving here means that there're multiple CAs sharing the same environment, each with a different neighborhood (shape & size), different rules and its own moving fuzzy mask/transition zone. Neighborhoods can also have a temporal dimension and as such are technically 1.5D or 2D and able to look up cell states from the (near) past. Where CAs overlap spatially, hybrid forms are emerging and these interactions can lead to entirely new outcomes...
