The area of the US and Puerto Rico in moderate drought or worse declined slightly to 20.42% from 21.37% the week before.

Population in drought is down substantially, to 30.8 million from 49.5 million, with improvement in populous eastern states.

Drought began in Nebraska about three years ago following a couple of quiet years with nary a trace of dryness. Prior to that, the Cornhusker State has seen little drought since the intense flash drought episode that developed in 2012.
