A question for retro tech bros:

My employer is still using an OKI dot matrix printer, model Microline 620, and an Epson dot matrix printer, model FX-890.

The OKI printer is not working, and the FX-890 will only print some screens, but not all.

It's an older Windows system, but I'm not sure which one, might be XPS.

In the "available printer list" all of the printer statuses are "idle", nothing in que.

What can be done to get Windows communicating again with the dot matrix printers?

TIA.

As some may know, I'm a semi-avid typewriter collector. Now, due to somewhat related circumstances beyond anyone's control, @ckvi basically forced my hand and convinced me to get an old dot matrix printer - Epson LX-800, late-1980s - and a corresponding early-2000s HP laptop with a parallel printer port.

So here's a time-lapse of printing the GameFAQs guideline for Breath of Fire III. I love the sound of a soprano office buzzsaw!

You collect complaints about your poor copper shipments on clay tablets, I collect vintage Amstrad CPC software price-lists on dot-matrix printouts. We are not the same.

Two dot matrix printers recreated in font form by me. On the left the Epson FX-80 reconstructed from dot map grids in its manual; On the right a reconstruction from found continuous stationery printouts of a different unknown printer.

On the whole i find the Epson design more pleasant and a little more consistent, but occasionally the other design wins. For example, the /asterisk and the /K.

Look what I found stuffed in the back of a cupboard at the in-laws. Wide carriage continuous fanfold computer paper. And it has code on. Is it COBOL?

💡🖨️ For terminal access, you don't even need a monitor. Ancestor of this dot matrix printer with a keyboard, the DECwriter III, had its roots in teleprinters, which evolved from telegraphy. This model dates back to 1977 and supports only the more modern RS-232 standard with a maximum speed of 9600 bit/s.
