Why is Yiddish the best failed...

"... Go back far enough and every #culture and faith has its own #tradition of respecting the sanctity of here, and not searching for Zion in an elusive ever-distant promised land. In eastern Europe, before the fascist and Stalinist annihilations, the Jewish socialist #LaborBund organized around the yiddish concept of #Doikayt, or “#hereness”. Molly Crabapple, who has written a forthcoming book about this neglected history, defines Doikayt as the right to “fight for freedom and safety in the places where they lived, in defiance of everyone who wanted them dead” – and rather than be forced to flee to safety in Palestine or the United States. Perhaps what is needed is a modern-day universalization of that concept: a commitment to the right to the “hereness” of this particular ailing planet, to these frail bodies, to the right to live in #dignity wherever on the planet we are, even when the inevitable shocks forces us to move. “Hereness” can be portable, free of nationalism, rooted in #solidarity, respectful of #indigenous rights and unbounded by borders. ...
We have reached a choice point, not about whether we are facing #apocalypse but what form it will take. The activist sisters Adrienne Maree and Autumn Brown touched on this recently on their aptly named podcast, How to Survive the End of the World. In this moment, when #endTimes #fascism is waging war on every front, new #alliances are essential. But instead of asking: “Do we all share the same #worldview?” Adrienne urges us to ask: “Is your heart beating and do you plan to live? Then come this way and we will figure out the rest on the other side.” ..."
reminder, at the Peretz Centre we're hosting this free online lecture by Molly Crabapple tomorrow at 5pm PST, which will be excellent 🕵️

Molly Crabapple investigates the radical history and modern relevance of the Jewish Labor Bund, in the third lecture of the 2025 Zhargon Speaker Series. This speaker series is part of the Peretz Centre's Discovering Doikayt initiative. We acknowledge the support of the Canadian Race Relations Foundation with funding provided by the Government of Canada.
This was obviously inspired by the historical persecution of Jewish people, but could just as easily apply to critics of Zionism within the Jewish community today, or LGBT people in Trump's USA.

Od tego zaczyna się Wielka Zmiana, którą Klein i Taylor formułują za autorkami podcastu "How To Survive The End Of The World":
Czego i nam wszystkim życzę (z lekkim opóźnieniem) z okazji Dnia Ziemi.
A #longread but definitely worth it
"The fact that their profits are predicated on planetary devastation helps explain why do-gooder discourse among the powerful is giving way to open expressions of disdain for the idea that we owe each other anything by right of our shared humanity."

"Doikayt was an articulation of a secular Judaism I hadn’t been explicitly taught, but nonetheless been raised on. A version of Judaism that allowed my father to step beyond his own community to find love with and marry a Black Jamaican woman. A Judaism that told my grandparents that they had to push past their discomfort and objections to my parents’ union, and come to embrace my mother. A Judaism in which I could eventually find myself, and make my place, as a woman who was both Black and Jewish. To me, doikayt meant being Jewish, in all of my and the world’s complexity."
