A while since I finnished these. Used when spinning thread of flax fibers. Distaff in english or "linfäste" in Swedish. They can be very simple in shape or very detailed with carvings.

These are carved out of birch. The longer one got an old bamboo staff from an old fishing rod. It's quite long so when you sit you have the staff under your arm, and the end is standing on the seat for a steady hold while working. The smaller one got a shorter staff you easely can hold while spinning.

The spiral pattern or what you should call it, I tried to imitate fibers wrapped around a stick.

Sometimes it's very nice to carve a circle that is not a correct circle.
The sligthly squashed clementine is the
ideal shape in my opinion.

A distaff I've made for an upcoming exhibition. The pattern is built up of circles and sections of circles and I more or less started at the bottom filling the space and figured out the next segment as I went. Very nice to work with a pair of compasses and just trust it completely. The circle is law and you just need to adapt and find ways to make it fit in the given area.
