Odessa, Ukraine — fragments of a city that once felt like home

Here are some old photos from Odessa, a city that became a quiet anchor during the first years of my life on the road. In this post, I’m sharing 8 images taken across different moments and different visits, small windows into a place I kept returning to over time.

Back then, Odessa wasn’t just a stop on a map for me. It was a city I came back to again and again, because something about it felt alive in a way I couldn’t fully explain. I loved the atmosphere in the streets, the mix of history and everyday life, the long walks along the coast, and the architecture that seemed to tell stories even when you didn’t know the language. No matter what the weather was like, I walked. Rain, wind, or sun — it didn’t matter. Being outside, moving through the city, was part of how I experienced it.

Many of those days ended with the same small ritual. I would sit down at Aroma Kava, order a cappuccino and a piece of cake, and watch the city flow past. Locals, travelers, snippets of conversations in different languages, the sound of traffic and footsteps — all of it blended into a kind of calm background that made me feel both alone and connected at the same time.

The last time I left Odessa was in February 2022, through the airport. At the time, I didn’t know it would be the last time I would see the city the way I remembered it.

Since then, everything feels different. The memories are still warm, but they carry a quiet sadness now. If the war had never happened, I know I would still be going back, still walking those same streets, still sitting in the same cafés, and still adding new chapters to a place that once felt like a second home.

Hello,
I see that defcon.social had an upgrade, but unfortunately that brought some drawbacks. For one thing, the ALT text no longer works as a tooltip and the media/audio player now looks just as ugly as it does on Mastodon.social...
Can you change that again please ^^

"I'm sorry for you Mastodon users due to insufficiently configured software on your server side you unfortunately only see a third of the displayed images. I can expressly recommend the platform defcon.social to scientifically and creatively interested and committed users of the Fediverse."

Moon Phases

In our entire solar system, the only object that shines with its own light is the Sun. That light always beams onto Earth and Moon from the direction of the Sun, illuminating half of our planet in its orbit and reflecting off the surface of the Moon to create moonlight. Sometimes the entire face of the Moon glows brightly. Other times we see only a thin crescent of light. Sometimes the Moon seems to disappear. These shifts are called moon phases.

The eight lunar phases are, in order: new moon, waxing crescent, first quarter, waxing gibbous, full moon, waning gibbous, third quarter, and waning crescent. The cycle repeats about once a month (every 29.5 days).

Like Earth, the Moon has a day side and a night side, which change as the Moon rotates. The Sun always illuminates half of the Moon while the other half remains dark, but how much we are able to see of that illuminated half changes as the Moon travels through its orbit.

Let’s take a look at the individual phases, and how the movements of the Moon and Sun appear to us as we watch from the Northern Hemisphere on Earth.

The Moon orbits Earth from a viewpoint above the North Pole in this animation. The blue gridlines show how the same side of the Moon always faces Earth. The size of the Earth and Moon are enlarged 20 times.

Yes, I created the #Pixelfed account "just in case" with the intention of archiving topic-related images there. Since I created the account, I unfortunately can't find the time for it and therefore I haven't noticed your request yet. But the plan for the archive is in place.

#defconsocial offers the advantage and the option of linking different #media with more #text than other platforms of the #Fediverse or #Mastodon and therefore it is optimal for my purposes.

In addition, the uploading and layout of media (e.g. the presentation of the media player) is much more advanced on defcon.social.

I really hope all other Fediverse platforms will follow this good example soon!

seems like defcon.social added some ip's in block list. my ISP provided IP gets a forbidden error while my cloud instances can reach through. so i get all follower details but my direct connection for my defcon.social login doesnt works.

Odd situation here on #defconsocial

Anyone else get a mass #unfollow? I did.

I patched it up by importing follows from another account, and got an absolute flurry of notifications.

It wasn't just from one server, but from a variety.

#Export your follows periodically. You might need it in case something like this happens to you.

Is there something to the classic Hershey's Kiss shape? Or is there something better?
