A male ebony jewelwing damselfly (Calopteryx maculata). Jewelwings live along forested waterways, landing in sunny areas. This woodland was filled with them yesterday. Adults eat lots of smaller insects including mosquitoes.
Damselflies fold their wings upright along the body when at rest, while dragonflies hold their wings flat.
Back from 10 days birding in The #Gambia with the fine folk from Gambia Birding Experience. Quite a few insects to try and ID over the next few weeks too. Here’s a random #damselfy that got into out van. Not tried to get to species yet.
