The states of Durango and Zacatecas really surprised us. So many warm-hearted people in the villages, so much rich culture in the cities. Every few kilometers there is a small, often pretty town, with at least one small shop. This makes traveling with children very easy. There are usually other children for Tomte to play with, which makes our breaks more relaxing. Things are going really well at the moment. Thanks to all the people we met!

One year old and already so many different views from the tent. On Tomte's birthday a couple of weeks ago, we see cacti whose needles shine in the morning sun and have a view over the majestic expanse of the Anza Borrego desert when we look out of the tent.

After a rather strenuous morning, we set off. A three-day dirt road route with no infrastructure. Did we do all our shopping in the rush? Tomte doesn't sleep for long during the day at the moment. Are we getting our miles in? Tomte has barely fallen asleep and we've only driven 5km when we come across a barrier with a passage for pedestrians which is too narrow for our bikes. There's no help for it. We unhook everything, lift the bikes and trailers over it. Of course, Tomte woke up. Shit, this is a good start. What are we actually doing here? First break. A few kilometres further on, I have a flat tire. Damn. Next break. We cook something. Tomte grabs the chilli bottle and suckles on it. Cries. What stress. Patching the tyre. Where the hell has the valve cap gone now???? We carry on. Tomte falls asleep. Peace and quiet. No traffic. Wonderful! We get really far. Much further than we thought. That feels good. The path is extremely steep and rugged in places. I am amazed at how Chris manages to get up there with the trailer. At some point we reach the top and drive through the crater of the super volcano Valles Caldera. The grass is straw-colored and golden. What a joy!

Wow, what a start! The altitude, the heavy loaded bikes and the cold at night challenge us. But the sight of the bright yellow aspens is worth every effort. The moose are also on the move here in Colorado and so we often find ourselves completely surprised in front of one.

We love camping. The fresh air that blows through the mesh at night, the perfected, minimalist home, cooking in front of the tent, mostly surrounded by nature, the patter of the rain, the birdsong in the early morning hours, the scent of the forest... It's so much fun looking for a suitable place to spend the night. Where do we want to set up our house today? We want our son to experience this magic.

When Tomte takes his naps, we try to cycle as far as we can get. It's the time we have for ourselves. Time to think about things and reflect or listen to a podcast or music. When he wakes up, we'll take a break soon. Preferably somewhere near water. It's hot these days.
But we need to be flexible with what we get where we are. That's part of the game. And there is always something. A solution, a surprise, a nice encounter.....We never know - and we love it :)
