Interesting to compare this to government dismay when Meta shut down CrowdTangle; apparently government hates being held to account by third parties:
Enda Leahy, the Courtsdesk chief executive […said]: “We built the only system that could tell journalists what was actually happening in the criminal courts. “HMCTS’s own data proves they can’t do it — their records were accurate 4.2 per cent of the time, 1.6 million cases were heard without any advance notice to the press.
… An HMCTS spokesman said that the press always had and would retain full access to information from the courts to ensure accurate reporting.

📌 CrowdTangle bol kľúčovým nástrojom pre novinárov, výskumníkov a watchdog organizácie na monitorovanie dezinformácií, nenávistných prejavov a iného škodlivého obsahu na platformách Facebook a Instagram.
📌 Nástroj bol vyvinutý v roku 2011. O päť rokov neskôr ho odkúpila spoločnosť Facebook (dnes známa pod názvom Meta).
📌 Vo všeobecnosti nástroj slúžil na prezeranie verejného obsahu na platformách Facebook a Instagram, ku ktorým boli poskytované rôzne typy štatistík. Výskumníci tak vďaka nástroju dokázali odhaľovať aj nefaktický obsah a jeho najvplyvnejších šíriteľov.
📌 Funkcie CrowdTangle v minulosti umožnili napríklad vyhodnotiť online obsah delegitimizujúci výsledok amerických prezidentských volieb v roku 2020 a upozorniť na možnú násilnú eskaláciu ešte pred samotným útokom na Kapitol v januári 2021. 📌 Meta plánuje CrowdTangle nahradiť nástrojom Meta Content Library, ku ktorému však majú prístup iba „kvalifikované akademické a neziskové inštitúcie, ktoré produkujú výskum v oblasti vedy a verejného záujmu“. To vylučuje množstvo vedcov, akademikov a novinárov. https://bit.ly/46QwkfM
📌 Okrem exkluzívneho prístupu je nástroj Meta Content Library kritizovaný pre jeho nízku transparentnosť, obmedzenosť funkcií a horší používateľský dizajn. 📌 Skutočnosť, že sa firma rozhodla zrušiť funkčný, populárny a rozsiahlo používaný nástroj v priebehu kampane pred prezidentskými voľbami v Spojených štátoch amerických vyvoláva množstvo otázok. 📌 V prípade, že Meta nevyhovie výzve na ponechanie nástroja CrowdTangle do januára 2025, ako požadujú jeho používatelia, bude vážne ohrozená kontrola pravdivosti informácií.
📌 Meta sa k zrušeniu vyjadrila len okrajovo. Prezident globálnych záležitostí spoločnosti Nick Clegg cez svoj blogový post odkázal, že firma o Meta Content Library zbiera spätnú väzbu, ktorú plánuje vziať do úvahy pri aktualizácii tohto nástroja. https://bit.ly/4fQ8e92

Facebook and Instagram parent Meta Platforms has shut down CrowdTangle. That was a tool widely used by researchers, watchdog organizations and journalists to monitor social media posts, notably to track how misinformation spreads on its platforms. The shutdown was protested by researchers and nonprofits. Dozens of groups including the Center for Democracy and Technology, the Digital Forensic Research Lab at the Atlantic Council, Human Rights Watch and NYU’s Center for Social Media & Politics sent a letter to the company asking that it keep the tool running through at least January so it would be available through the U.S. presidential elections.
