We were lucky enough to be visited by entomologist Dr Ian Smith today. An enthusiastic team of our local composters fanned out across the compost hub to discover and document the amazing diversity of insect life that helps us reduce food waste and make amazing compost for the community. We identified different critters and examined them closeup under microscopes to find out more about the roles they play in the composting process.
The LOCCAL Loop newsletter: March, 2026
# ClimateChange #BenefitsOfComposting #Bushfires #YIMBY #CommunityResilience #What'sOn #CommunityComposting The end of summer is upon us, although you would hardly know it from the temperatures! This summer saw records tumble across Australia, with the CSIRO reporting that January brought the hottest temperatures ever recorded in numerous areas - some exceeding 49°C. Image courtesy of ABC 27/1/26 Tragically, extreme heat also fuelled devastating bushfires across Victoria.

#CommunityComposting is about empowering people of all backgrounds and cultures to access local solutions to managing food waste, process valuable growing nutrients, and unlock the power of sharing as a community that strengthens and nourishes us all.
Wherever you are, whatever resources you have available, we would like to help you succeed in creating #compost alongside your family, friends, and neighbours.
#LOCCAL is founded and managed by community composters. If you would like to get involved and support our work, please get in contact.
Fantastic to run into Danny (founder of the Peels app) turning over a batch at 78 Clifford today. Peels connects people who have food scraps with people who compost. It’s replacement for ShareWaste, and a brilliant way to help more people compost. Available worldwide at: https://www.peels.app
Not only a talented web dev guy, Danny is also a hard working composter! We had a great morning chatting and turning food scraps into growing resources for our neighbours.
Lovely day for winter gardening: we took an electric barrow load of community compost for a ride along the river over to support our neighbours at Crossroads Community Garden in Footscray.
They immediately put it to good use!
