It has always been thus, whether Suffragettes, anti apartheid tour protesters, anti war activists...

The only time the government sided with protesters was during French anti-atomic testing. Not only did the govt side with protesters,the power of the State was deployed.

PM Kirk sent a warship ("Peaceship"?) to Mururoa to show our displeasure.

THAT was leadership.
