Bought a cat-carrier for our broody baby chicken to go sit in if she wants to. We had to separate her from the other two again, since she's being bullied for hogging the nest :(
The new young chickens survived their first night in the coop with the older hens.
Chillwetter
After losing two chickens in the last two weeks, I finally created #chicken Alcatraz yesterday.
The fencing I already had was fairly high at about four feet, but was not high enough that the most agile of them couldn't leap over it -- even with clipped wings.
I almost doubled the fencing height by lifting up duplicate fence panels and zip tying them to the lower panels.
I know I should've done this before Sam was killed. I'm so, SO sad about that! I can't even process her loss yet.
So far, two days in a row, though, nobody has gotten out of the run, and three sides of it are pretty fox proof.
The only way of fox could get into the run would be if they got into the next-door neighbors' yard, took a run across their driveway, and lept up over their wooden fence. It could happen if they left their back gate open.
I saw a fox do exactly this leap from that front yard a couple of years ago and it decimated the previous neighbors' chickens. A fox would have to jump over their fence twice to get to my chickens now, though.
None of the ones who died recently were within the run. They were all out in the yard, feeling safe and happy. Stupid me. 😖
