🐔 It's been a while, so here's another #chicken update!

TL;DR
- Rehomed Jette to a bigger group down the street
- Cleo and Henna were both laying eggs, yay!
- Cleo finally grew up and started to attack Henna
- When we couldn't separate them last weekend, Cleo won the pecking war, and Henna ended up with a bloody comb. Neither of them has laid since, due to the stress.
- PLOT TWIST: We will add four new #hens on Saturday! Hopefully, this will ease the tension for the hens.

#Chicken update! 🐔 Jette, the Stella murderer, is being a right bitch to the others as well, trying to assert her dominance by pecking them bloody. So, I'm keeping her separate during the day and in a cardboard box in the shed at night to give Henna and Cleo a break. (The elder Henna is still a bit weak after her moult, though she gave Jette hell when I tried reintroducing them on Saturday after a week of semi-separation. Cleo's still too small to fight back.)

But since Jette's the only #hen laying at the moment, I suppose I'll have to cut her some slack for her pea brain. As you can see, they still seek each other out. It started snowing heavily again today, so instead of spreading out in the garden and avoiding each other, they'd probably just huddle in the coop all day ... where the bloodlust runs high.

We're considering adding two more #chickens to the group, hoping more birds might dilute the stress, but it's a lengthy process, and we're not sure it'll actually help. 🫤 In the meantime, I've ordered some anti-peck spray. Maybe that'll sort out Jette's anger management issues. 🤞

I only wanted a few eggs, not a bloody soap opera in my back garden. 😭

☝️ This was the very first caption of the very first photo I posted on Pixelfed a year ago. It's my #Fediversary today!! 🎂

It was a photo of my three #chickens standing in the snow in front of their coop, suspiciously eyeing the white stuff that had covered the grass.

A year ago, I was so horrified and fed up with the tech bro mentality (I still am, and it's getting worse every day) that I created Pixelfed and Mastodon accounts to try them out. I'm not active much on Mastodon, other than following a few news outlets and FotoVorschlag of course. But Pixelfed, you've won my heart! 𝗧𝗵𝗮𝗻𝗸 𝘆𝗼𝘂, you lovely people, for making the past year a joy to be online! 🥹

So, as an official Fediversary post, here's another Henuary moment: Cleo, the runt of the flock, drinking some snow a few days ago. It's currently raining, and the snow has turned into soggy slush, so any chicken photos today won't be pretty.

It's the same old story every year. I feel so damn sorry for the chickens that they have to endure this FRIGGIN' COLD. Every winter it's a constant feeling of pity on the brave little girls... 🙁

Meine #Hühner werden aktuell um viele #Federn erleichtert, sie #mausern gerade, was das Zeug hält, und die beiden alten #Hennen sehen ganz gerupft aus (wächst aber jetzt alles schön nach, wie man sieht). Dazu Wind und Regen und seit heute ist auch noch Stallpflicht angesagt wegen der Vogelgrippe. Die Hühnis haben es gerade echt nicht (feder)leicht.

My #chickens are a lot lighter now, as they're losing so many #feathers. They're in the middle of #moulting and especially the two older #hens look a bit scruffy (their feathers are growing back nicely though, as you can see). There's also rain and wind and as of today, they have to stay cooped up due to avian flu. Apologies for the pity party, I just wanted to ... shed some light on the daily struggles of our feathery friends. 😋
