Oops – I made a boo-boo 😳
This fly isn't in fact the fairly common Dexiosoma caninum – rather, it's the extremely rare Dexia vacua, thought almost extinct 😲
I saw a male on 14 May, but females look different, with dark lateral abdominal bands. The wing venation & bristle pattern confirm that it's D. vacua 👍

Finally for now, one of the many crab spiders in the garden waiting for unwitting victims.
This is a Napoleon spider (Synema globosum; 🇩🇪 Südliche Glanz-Krabbenspinne).
While they all have Le Petit Caporal's hat, they come in different colours, including reds, browns, & yellows, or just brown & white like this one.

This a marmalade hover fly (Episyrphus balteatus), one of the prettier & more common small aphid hover flies in our garden.
In German, it's known as the Hainschwebfliege or Winterschwebfliege, the latter as it's seen year round.

Another nymph, this time of the Common Nettle Flower Bug (Plagiognathus arbustorum; 🇩🇪 Braunschwarze Nesselweichwanze), enjoying the on-and-off sunshine on some sage.

Before posting some pictures from today, here's one from a couple of weeks ago that got stuck in the macro stack processing backlog.
It's a female Dexiosoma caninum (🇩🇪 Engerlings-Raupenfliege), a parasitic tachnid fly that lays its eggs on the larvae of other species – widespread in Europe, but not very common.
