I found this chonker last weekend munching on some cow parsley flowers. The ants seemed perturbed but the weevil didn’t seem to care about them chomping on its face

der turnte da sehr emsig im löwenzahn, leider ist das lustigste bild, wo er ein bein hebt um über einen staubbeutel zu kommen und es aussieht als würde er uns winken nicht scharf geworden 🤷

gleich 2 bilder, auf dass klar werde warum der 'variabler' mit vornamen heißt. eigentlich klingt ja das 'würfelfleckiger staubrüssler', wie wikipedia den nennt, sowieso netter.

In 16th century France weevils were tried in ecclesiastical court after an exceptionally bad year of damage to vineyards in the town of St. Julian. The church ultimately decided to grant the weevils a plot of land in exchange for the weevils departing from the vineyards, and the church threatened to excommunicated the weevils if they broke the agreement, or maybe anathematize them depending on the source. The weevils (whose populations follow boom-bust cycles...!) seemed to go away next year. Alas, in 1587, the weevils broke their agreement with the Catholic church and returned to infest the vineyards again.
