From battling TB to improving infrastructure, federal budget falls short of Indigenous needs
The Assembly of First Nations, the Métis National Council, the Inuit Tapiriit Kanatami and other Indigenous organizations asked for billions of dollars in the federal budget to deal with a wide variety of Indigenous concerns.
The federal budget, delivered by Finance Minister Chrystia Freeland March 28, came up well short.
“This budgetary process is sort of like a memory replaying,” said Assembly of First Nations (AFN) National Chief RoseAnne Archibald about the new federal budget announced March 28. “First Nations make requests—reasonable requests by the way—and the government denies many of those reasonable requests and gives a minimal amount. And we go back and forth and talk about what works and what doesn’t in the budgetary cycle,” said Archibald.
"(The) government proposes to amend the #CanadaElectionsAct to establish a uniform #federal approach in respect to #federal political parties’ collection, use, and disclosure of #PersonalInformation in manner that overrides overlapping provincial legislation,” one of the document’s appendices reads.
