BlueBubbles: Serverlösung leitet iMessages an Android weiter

Apple macht seinen Kommunikationsdienst iMessage nach wie vor nur auf eigenen Geräten zugänglich. Das Open-Source-Vorhaben BlueBubbles will das ändern.

heise online
#bluebubbles is awesome even when it's just available on my local network. iMessage on my #linux and #windows machines at home is sooo handy.
My buddy let me borrow his old #google #Pixel 6 that was sitting around unused. Gonna do the week-long Google Fi free trial so I can properly test drive #Android. I've been using it on hotspot here and there and tried out Android Auto. So far the experience has been pretty cool. Loaded up some movies and roms for my flight to Oregon by just plugging it into my computer. DOPE! I just need to re-set up my #bluebubbles server to get imessages on it, and it's go time.
I needed a new #desktop #wallpaper for my #bluebubbles #macmini #server so I made this #retro one. Sharing in case anyone else wants to use it. 1920x1080 and 1600x1200 versions if you roll 4:3. #apple #mac

@thegibson well, speaking as an recent iOS refugee you wont really miss a fucking thing.

Edit: thoughts.

Setting up #BlueBubbles for a few contacts that couldn't handle options like #Signal wasn't worth it.

@getgrid private encryted cross platform live location among friends and family, wish it worked over veilid.

Unfortunately GrapheneOS is the only option if you need serious security and privacy, limited to Pixel hardware. Banking apps do work, which isn't always the case with microG.

Switching off #bluebubbles soon. I set it up for those folks who couldn't manage switching from iMessage to #Signal. Ironically with Zuckerberg exposing himself as fascist, most of my contacts have started showing up in Signal organically. Now, only two people that are unwilling or unable to setup signal. Not gonna keep a MacOS VM spun up for two people, even if one's my mom. Oh and fuck Google #RCS messages, don't trust Google with this shit.
3 months into my #SwitchtoAndroid from #ios and I have some personal notes for the #android curious.
• I fucking love having an actual headphone jack!
• Why can't I delete Facebook? Search for debloater.
• Huh, I don't miss iMessage. I tried #bluebubbles but only two contacts didn't switch over to #signal
• FUCK #tmobile damn their #visualvoicemail app to hell. Nobody I actually know calls any way.
• Browser scene sucks, nice to have options, none are exactly great.
• fuck #RCS messages.
@ironicbadger just watched a few #Tailscale videos, love to see a #bluebubbles with tailscale set up. Most of the instructions for setting up bluebubbles server call for exposing the server to the internet… which of course is never ideal. Now, if only we could do the push notifications without #firebase on #android.

Holy crap it works!

I can send and receive iMessages from my Linux computers!

The only bug I’ve encountered so far is the need to temporarily disable 2 factor authentication in order to sign in with the desktop client, but other than that, it’s working!

Rooting for the #DOJ action against #Apple because you’re tired of #greenBubbles vs. #blueBubbles? I write about why the situation is a bit more complex… and the #antitrust suit stands to harm us. https://reviews.ofb.biz/sa1199 https://mastodon.faithtree.social/@ofb/112259283041789581
Hamstringing Security in Pursuit of Blue Bubbles

A couple of weeks ago, I wrote about the wrongheadedness of the Department of Justice’s antitrust witch hunt against Apple. One reason amongst the many deserves its own consideration.
