We saw another three films this week. Two of them really did not need to be made, and I’m ambivalent about the third.
Charlie’s Angels
Charlie’s Angels, the TV series, is something that largely passed me by. I remember being aware of it, but it’s not a series of which I have any real memory, and if I did see any of it, it was occasional and unmemorable. That said, I did enjoy the 2000 and 2003 films.
This 2019 reboot of Charlie’s Angels feels like a bit of a wasted opportunity. It isn’t actually bad, but it never manages to be particularly good either.
The Punisher
2004’s The Punisher is, however, actually bad. It’s quite an achievement to take Marvel’s darkly violent antihero and deliver a film that is as dull and predictable as this one.
Black Clover: Sword of the Wizard King
This is a bit of an odd one. Black Clover is both a manga and an anime and Black Clover: Sword of the Wizard King is the feature film spin-from the anime.
I know nothing about either the manga, nor the anime, and for me this film amounts to nothing more than an increasingly incoherent series of fight scenes. The kids are a lot more familiar with the backstory than I am. All of them enjoy the film a lot more than I do and one of them loves it.
I have to conclude, therefore, that this really is a film whose target audience are already fans of the series. For someone like me, who is not already a fan, there is nothing to pull you in.
