On #ThisDayInHistory in 2024, #BasharAlAssad fled as #Damascus fell to #HTS, a Turkish-backed Islamist militia. The #Baathist régime, there since 1963, should have been toppled decades earlier, given its corruption & incompetence, but it's hard to say the new régime looks better.

On #ThisDayInHistory in 1988, the Iraqi state and #ChemicalAli used #MustardGas to kill 5,000 #Kurds in #Halabja as a part of the #AlAnfal campaign of #KurdishGenocide. Over 100,000 were killed and 80% of the settlements in #IraqiKurdistan were destroyed by the #Baathist régime.

although israel's attacks on #hezbollah significantly weakened hezbollah which was fighting for #assad in #syria

and the rebel group ascendant now is not #daesh/ #ISIL, but they are #jihadi. Hayat Tahrir al-Sham #HTS broke ranks with #AlQaeda and has attacked #ISIS

Iraq needed Western sources , to avoid becoming too dependent on USSR . In issues - Syrian role in Lebanon, Arab–Israeli conflict,having a nonaligned movement separate from Western,Soviet- French and Iraqi policy differed. #Baathist ideology was fundamentally anticommunist
