Oddly, much of the rank and file on both sides of this are seeing #secession as more or less inevitable at some point - but it is studiously being avoided at the highest levels and in the media, even the nominally independent pundits.

Of course it won't be the "banners in the breeze" setup of the 1860s, but that doesn't mean that it won't happen.

Perhaps the most intriguing scenario is #SoftSecession , where we have a figurehead CIS-style Federal government mouthing platitudes of democracy and unity while the states forge their own alliances. We're already doing that to some extent, and it's entirely possible that the #Trumpista won't even really notice that much of a difference, provided they never venture into the "sinful" ("black") city.

Perhaps they'll have internal customs checkpoints as well, à la #IraqiKurdistan
On #ThisDayInHistory in 1988, the Iraqi state and #ChemicalAli used #MustardGas to kill 5,000 #Kurds in #Halabja as a part of the #AlAnfal campaign of #KurdishGenocide. Over 100,000 were killed and 80% of the settlements in #IraqiKurdistan were destroyed by the #Baathist régime.

Reporters Without Borders (RSF) yesterday, elsewhere:

#IraqiKurdistan: Syrian Kurdish journalist Suleiman Ahmed of RojaNews was sentenced today to 3 years in prison on the false charge of belonging to the Democratic Union Party (PYD). RSF condemns this unjust sentence and calls for his immediate release.

The PYD is the political party in autonomous North and East Syria ("Rojava") whose militias are the world-beloved YPJ and YPG, primary in the territorial defeat of ISIL/Daesh, primary armed force of the Women's Revolution, etc.

Authoritarian reactionary Erdoğan's Turkey, a several times proven ISIL-collaborator and armer, considers PYD to be "terrorist" although it has not committed actual terrorism nor ever attacked Turkey, so Erdoğan's quisling party in the Kurdistan Region of Iraq, the ruling Barzani-clan dominated KDP, does as their master wills it and fights against freedom, peaceful co-existence in diversity and self-determination, for the regime which has repeatedly stated genocidal intent with its imperialist war of aggression in the Kurdistan Region of Iraq.

Zginąć mogło nawet 5,000 osób, a drugie tyle zostało rannych.

Na zdjęciu, mieszkańcy Syryjskiego Kurdystanu, Rożawy, oddają hołd zamordowanym.
