You can now get Rênas's zine online! I helped edit it and I think its a really great history and analysis of the Kurdish neighbourhoods in Aleppo that were targeted first in the Syrian Transitional Government's offensive on SDF held territory in January of this year.

As Rênas writes "What was being defended was not only Sheikh Maqsoud, but the possibility for Kurds in Syria to exist as visible urban political subjects, rooted in their city as an equal collective identity to others within it.”

Im Januar verstärkten Angriffe von Al-Qaida- und IS-nahen Kräften auf Aleppo, die sich gegen die Kurden richteten, tiefe Befürchtungen um das Schicksal Rojavas. Mit Unterstützung der Türkei übernahmen Extremisten Städte und Gefängnisse mit tausenden Dschihadisten und umzingelten Kobane. Gleichzeitig sagte EU-Ratspräsidentin Ursula von der Leyen der Übergangsregierung in Damaskus 6,2 Millionen Euro Soforthilfe zu.

Trotz dieser Gefahr leistete die Bevölkerung Rojavas Widerstand, und weltweit entstanden Demonstrationen und politischer Druck gegen die Unterstützung dschihadistischer Kräfte. Rojava zeigt, wie demokratischer Konföderalismus, Frauenbefreiung, Basisorganisationen und genossenschaftliche Wirtschaftssysteme trotz Konflikten gesellschaftliche Stabilität, Selbstverwaltung und kulturelle Zukunftsperspektiven stärken können.
