Starck by Philippe Starck for Axor

Dezeen Showroom: designed by Philippe Starck for Axor, the classic Starck tapware collection has a reduced form intended to reference simple hand pumps.

The designer based the shape of the Starck faucet range on traditional water pumps, such as you might find on a farm, simplifying the shape to two intersecting cylinders crowned with either a pin or feather handle.

The Starck tapware collection is available in a range of Axor finishes

The goal was for this design – created 25 years ago but still just as relevant today – to focus attention on the water itself.

"The idea was to make a design that was deeply, structurally respectful of water," said Starck. "It's our life. Water is life. And there is a beauty in water."

The tapware was informed by simple hand pumps

The Starck tapware range has options for the basin, bathtub and shower, including a shower column with RainAir technology that cocoons the user in its mist and a touch-free sensor-activated electronic mixer for the basin.

The collection is available in a range of Axor FinishPlus finishes, including brushed red gold or gold optic.

A newly added lever style offers extra precision

The Citterio collection is available in classic chrome and a range of special Axor FinishPlus finishes, including polished black chrome and brushed gold optic.

Edge bathroom collection by Jean-Marie Massaud for Axor

Dezeen Showroom: French designer Jean-Marie Massaud has worked with Axor to create Edge, which the German brand considers "quite possibly the most avant-garde bathroom collection ever".

The Edge collection is made using diamond-tipped tools from the space industry to give a level of precision that Axor says is unprecedented in bathroom design.

The Edge collection is cut using diamond-tipped tools for precision

The range includes several types of mixers for the tub or basin, as well as shower modules that offer up to five spray modes and precise control of water temperature and flow.

Designed to resemble sculptures of stacked rectangular prisms, the pieces are distinguished by their mirror-like surfaces, perfectly chamfered edges and fine decorative patterns.

It is made to look like a sculpture of rectangular prisms at the end of the tub or basin

"More than a mixer, each product in the collection is a jewel, a sculpture – a real, functioning piece of art that shares your intimacy for life," said Massaud. "That's my understanding of luxury."

The Edge collection is available in a choice of polished Axor FinishPlus finishes: red gold, bronze gold optic, black chrome or chrome.

Axor's Brushed Black Chrome products feature in The Londoner hotel

Promotion: the bathrooms of boutique hotel The Londoner in Leicester Square include Axor's Brushed Black Chrome finish taps and shower heads to mirror the building's industrial metalwork.

Designed by architecture studio Woods Bagot, the 16-storey The Londoner hotel was created to reflect the "elegance of West End life".

A range of Axor products have been specified throughout the hotel in its standard beds rooms, luxury suites and public spaces. Axor basins and bath mixers, showers, brassware accessories and kitchen mixers have been chosen for their "sleek silhouette and premium feel".

"Part of Edwardian Hotels London, the Londoner has been curated to reflect the drama and elegance of West End life," said project sales manager at Axor, Katie Weston.

"Synonymous with luxury, The Londoner specified Axor brassware throughout the entirety of the hotel."

The Londoner is based in Leicester Square

"Axor was the natural choice for this hotel," said The Londoner's head architect and creative director of Edwardian Group London, Rob Steul.

"The Londoner is all about understated luxury, we wanted guests to feel they were experiencing the best," Steul continued. "Axor delivers that in both its product design and function. The showering experience is like no other."

In standard rooms, Axor Citterio E 3-hole Wall-mounted Basin Mixers were used, while the Axor Citterio E Shower Sets were featured in the suites, complete with Axor 120 3jet Hand Showers.

The brand's Citterio E Bath Spout features in all rooms, while in the hotel's in-room kitchens, Axor Uno Mixers were chosen.

The hotel chose Axor products to be used in their standard rooms, suites and kitchens

"Paying attention to the smallest of details, the iconic Brushed Black Chrome finish has also been applied to all Universal Accessories," said the brand.

"From shower door handles and rail grab bars, to towel hooks and toilet paper holders, Londoner bathrooms have a truly unified, luxury aesthetic."

The Londoner's design has achieved a BREEAM Excellent rating, exceeding the requirements for water use and sustainable energy.

According to Axor, the brand contributed to this achievement, due to its AirPower and EcoSmart technologies, which are designed to reduce water consumption by up to 60 per cent without compromising on performance.

Axor develops accessories, including taps and basins

Axor develops and produces taps, showers and bathroom accessories for both kitchens and bathrooms.

For the over 25 years, Axor has developed collections with many international designers, including Philippe Starck, Jean-Marie Massaud and Patricia Urquiola.

The brand has presented five collections on Dezeen Showroom, including water-saving accessories by Barber Osgerby and free-standing taps by Antonio Citterio.

On 20 April, Axor brought together a panel of experts to discuss the concept of conscious luxury at the second edition of Axor Futures, a digital platform for events, which exchanged ideas around conscious consumption and longevity in design.

Furniture brands raise prices due to "excessive rise" in cost of materials and transport

Leading furniture and homeware brands including IKEA, Piet Hein Eek and Axor are raising prices by up to eight per cent due to global shipping issues and material shortages.

Brands are blaming "exponential" increases in the cost of raw materials, with some costs now "more than double" previous levels.

Dutch designer Piet Hein Eek's eponymous brand announced last week that it will introduce "inevitable" price increases of eight per cent from January.

"Due to the worldwide shortage and price increases of raw materials, in combination with the excessive rise in international transport costs, we are forced to raise our prices," said the brand.

This follows increases of approximately five per cent announced earlier this month by bathroom company Hansgrohe and its sister brand Axor, effective from January, while IKEA warned in November of an expected price increase in 2022.

Global supply chain crisis

The issues are a symptom of the global supply chain crisis, which has primarily been blamed on labour shortages and the Covid-19 pandemic.

Furniture brands have been impacted by both shortages of delivery transportation and raw materials, which have been delaying production and driving up the costs.

"When the world economy began to emerge from the interruption caused by Covid, I don't recall many forecasters predicting either the disruption and shortages there would be to global supply chains, nor the scale of price increases, particularly to commodities, labour and transportation," said Andy Tatton, group sales director for British furniture brand Boss Design.

Boss is one of several brands that have warned of plans to raise prices, but are still yet to reveal the scale of the increases.

More increases to be announced

Although the company already raised its prices in May 2021, Tatton said that a further increase will be applied in January 2022, to reflect "the level of sustained increases since then".

"We are still finalising the exact price changes, and, as in May, these will be applied on a range-by-range basis to reflect the relevant increases to input costs," said Tatton.

British brand Hølte, which offers a range of products for fitted kitchens, is similarly planning to raise its prices in 2022 after seeing the cost of birch plywood and medium-density fibreboard (MDF) "more than double" in price.

"This year we have seen exponential price increases to most, if not all, our materials," said Hølte director Fiona Ginnett.

"To date we have absorbed the cost increases either in part or in full. However in January we will see yet more increases, including 13 per cent on the price of all laminates, so we will unfortunately be forced to increase our prices for the first time."

IKEA will pass costs on to retailers

IKEA's plans to raise prices were revealed in November after Inter IKEA Group – the company that supplies stock to IKEA store franchisees – released its summary for the 2021 financial year.

Although the furniture giant experienced record sales during the pandemic, its pretax profit fell 16 percent from the previous year, a loss of €320 million (£273 million). It said "the steep increase in transport and raw material prices" was to blame.

Brexit Britain "no longer a viable distribution hub" say small design businesses

Speaking to Reuters, chief financial officer Martin van Dam said that IKEA has been absorbing these increased costs in order to keep its product prices stable.

But with supply chain issues expected to continue well into 2022, the company plans to pass some of the higher material and transport costs on to store owners, who will have final say over the extent of the price adjustments.

"The scarcity and pricing of raw materials, and then the logistical problems – that means it will be difficult to grow in FY22," Van Dam told Reuters. "Of course we plan for growth, we will go for it, but it's going to be very, very hard work in our supply chain, and with our retailers as well."

Coronavirus and labour shortage to blame

Global supply chain issues can be attributed to a combination of factors, according to research by think tank Institute for Government.

During the early stages of the Covid-19 pandemic, social distancing restrictions and the general economic downturn led to a slowdown in manufacturing.

In many instances, the shortages were high up in production supply chains – with examples including glues and resins – which is why the impact is only now being felt.

The pandemic also exacerbated the shortages of skilled labour that were already being felt worldwide, with the haulage and warehousing industries among those worst affected.

For the UK, the issues are believed to have been further worsened by Brexit. Industries that have typically relied on a workforce from the European Union (EU) are finding it harder than ever to recruit staff, while border issues have impacted international deliveries.

Designers and architects told Dezeen "everything has become an admin nightmare" following the UK's departure from the EU.

Water-saving and temperature-controlled bathroom products from Axor feature on Dezeen Showroom

German brand Axor has presented five collections of bathroom products on Dezeen Showroom, including water-saving accessories by Barber Osgerby and free-standing faucets by Antonio Citterio.

Axor collaborated with British design duo Barber Osgerby to create Axor One. The collection comprises 31 products made with a chrome or matte-black finish, ranging from wall-mounted taps to sizeable showerheads.

Included in the range are technology-driven faucets with a selection of handles and controls that foster "ultra-precise" water flow and allow users to select optimal temperatures.

The shower and bathtub products have controls that are integrated into a single panel called a thermostatic module, which allows users to regulate the water temperature and output.

Top image: the Axor One collection was designed by Barber Osgerby. Above: Axor One includes products with water-saving features

Also designed by Barber Osgerby is the Axor Universal Circular Accessories range, which comprises 21 bathroom accessories such as mirrors, soap dispensers, towel racks, shelves and toilet roll holders.

As its name suggests, the collection is intended for universal use and was designed to suit any bathroom interior style. The products are characterised by their pared-back forms with "slim silhouettes, rounded corners and balanced proportions", according to Axor.

Axor Citterio is a collection of bathroom taps designed by Italian designer Antonio Citterio for Axor, which was originally launched in 2003.

Citterio has updated the range, which now encompasses 70 different faucets designed for bathtubs, showers and washbasins. The faucets come in an array of handle styles that are distinguished by their flat surfaces in a bid to contrast traditional tubular taps.

The faucets also come in varying heights, as well as wall-mounted versions, free-standing faucets for baths and faucets for overhead showers.

Another faucet collection from Axor is French designer Jean-Marie Massaud's range called Axor Edge. The family of faucets includes options with four different heights, cantilevered and asymmetrical versions, as well as wall-mounted mixers, single-lever mixers or three-hole mixers.

The faucets are cut, shaped and polished using a "diamond-cutting technology" and are available in 15 different finishes, including matte black and chrome.

Axor has also released a collection of minimalist overheard showers created by Stuttgart-based studio Phoenix Design, which includes 12 models. Six of the models feature rounded heads, while the remaining six come with square heads that can be mounted to walls or ceilings.

The showers have two spray settings: one that disperses a soft, wide spray and another that provides a concentrated stream. The showers come with matching temperature control modules, which are available in a shiny chrome finish, as well as matching shower arms.

Axor is a German bathroom products manufacturer established in 1993. The brand regularly collaborates with leading architects and designers to create state-of-the-art and technology-driven products, including collections by David Adjaye, Nendo and Philippe Starck.

Its products span bathroom accessories, showers, waste systems, washbasins and bathtubs. The brand also produces products for kitchens, such as kitchen mixer taps and other faucets.
