#Australia has vowed to repair the graves of dozens of Australian soldiers in #Gaza after satellite imagery & witness testimony revealed they had been #bulldozed by the #Israel Defense Forces.

More than 250 Australian #soldiers are buried at the #GazaWarCemetery, administered by the Commonwealth, most of them #lighthorsemen who served WW1. The worst damage has been sustained to a corner of the cemetery that houses the graves of Australians who died during WW2. #auspol #ANZACS

Australian soldiers patrol the jungle in New Guinea - July 1945 #ww2 #worldwar2 #newguinea #anzacs #papuanewguinea #jungle #patrol

An excellent article. This spoke to me in so many ways. The conservative capture of the RSL and the AWM, and of course the misuse of ANZAC Day to glorify war leaves many ex-serving members in limbo. Our governments are terrible and our journalists insufficiently curious.

"There is no cultural space for dissenting veterans in Australia. They tend not to join veterans’ associations, or participate in local veteran community events.

Some of the veterans I spoke to initially participated in Anzac Day marches, but stopped attending after recognising how the day itself was exploited by conservative forces. “I don’t really want to be part of this,” realised one Vietnam veteran, “so I walked away from it.” "

Friday essay: ‘War has made me a pacifist’. Why are we so reluctant to acknowledge Australia’s anti-war veterans?

From the first world war to the invasion of Iraq, left-wing soldiers have questioned our involvement in wars. Yet we rarely hear these dissenting veteran’s voices.

Guess which 2 countries failed to sign a condemnation of #US #Trump threat of sanctions against #ICC?

Somewhat surprisingly the answer is #Australia and #NewZealand. It appears that the #ANZACS have joined the #Nazis in protecting war criminals from prosecution.

ICC condemns Trump's imposed sanctions, pledges to continue its work

"Sanctioning the ICC threatens the court's independence and undermines the international criminal justice system as a whole," said the European Council President.

Anzac Day and the half-remembered history of the Anzacs in Palestine - Overland literary journal

Schools are deliberate targets for government-funded mystification about Australia’s role in wars. Such instances of official remembrance crowd out the realities of war, and the consequences of Australia’s role in imperialism. As teachers, we should strive to resist this, and we should introduce our students to a fuller understanding of the history of the Anzacs.

Overland literary journal

_The Evening Post_, 25 Apr 1921:
         IN MEMORIAM.
AUSTRALIANS—A silent tribute to the memory of members of the Australian Imperial Force, who fell at Anzac.

  Comrade of knapsack and bandolier,
Tread light, we pray, as you pass this way,
For the sake of heroes slumbering here,
Nameless in death to the Judgment Day.
Tread light, lest the sound of your martial hosts,
The rattle of rifle or bayonet blade
May ring down the night to their silent posts,
And rouse them too soon for the Grand Parade.

Inserted by their comrades in Wellington.
