Here's a "good news" story from the Netherlands.

A cow escaped from a slaughterhouse in Groningen. It was then followed through an industrial estate by the police, who shot the animal multiple times. It survived several shots and kept standing. Eventually a policeman shot it from close by in the head and then a vet cut the animal's throat.

Where's the "good news" aspect to this story ? The vet is quoted as saying that the "emergency slaughter" was an act of kindness to prevent suffering, but also emphasized that as it was done quickly the animal's body can still be sold as meat. Actually, the NOS assures us multiple times in the article that this poor creature's flesh will be sold for profit and that people will eat it.

That was the story of the last few minutes of just one of 1.7 million animals slaughtered for profit yesterday in the Netherlands by the meat and dairy industry. That's not a mistype. 1.7 M animals really are slaughtered every day in this small country. This mass slaughter is required to cater for those who eat meat, drink milk and consume eggs.

But those of us who are vegan and take no part in any of this are seen as the extremists. Right ?

No-one needs animal products.
