Human Connection in Academic Innovation? (Issue #7)
Explore the role of empathy, emotion, and authentic connection in academic innovation —and how appropriate vulnerability builds stronger human communities.
Here is a portrait of Betha Whitlow, the driving force behind WashU’s Digital Art History Lab (DAHL).
Once a slide curator, she digitized vast collections and helped make her own role obsolete — paving the way for DAHL, which now trains and empowers students in digital art history. Whitlow is celebrated not only for her innovation but also for her mentorship and advocacy for staff and students alike.

Washington People: Betha Whitlow
As director of the Digital Art History Lab, Betha Whitlow provides work experiences to students that are both fruitful and fairly compensated. She wants the same for her Washington University in St. Louis colleagues. On the Danforth Staff Council, she successfully advocated for parental leave.
The SourceDid you know that Washington University in St. Louis has its own Digital Art History Lab (DAHL)?
Founded in 2021, DAHL supports students and faculty in exploring the possibilities of digital methods in art history — from hands-on training with tech tools to collaborative projects that connect research and creativity.

Welcome! You are invited to join a webinar: ORCID in the Wild featuring Fundacao para a Ciencia e a Tecnologia. After registering, you will receive a confirmation email about joining the webinar.
Join us for "ORCID in the Wild," a series that uncovers the diverse and impactful ways ORCID is adopted within the global scholarly community.
Much like seeds carried by the wind, ORCID has taken root worldwide, fostering connections and cultivating collaborations. In this session, we are excited to highlight Fundação para a Ciência e a Tecnologia (FCT) and its innovative use of ORCID in research management.
Since 2014, PTCRIS—Portugal’s national research information system—has championed the principle, "Register once, reuse always," streamlining research management for Portuguese researchers. While ORCID adoption isn’t mandatory, it has become highly encouraged due to its numerous benefits for researchers. By integrating ORCID with national systems like CIÊNCIAVITAE, PTCRIS has significantly reduced the administrative burden on researchers, saving them valuable time and effort.
Through PTCRISync, researchers no longer need to manually update their profiles across various platforms. New projects or publications added to ORCID are automatically synced with CIÊNCIAVITAE, ensuring data accuracy without redundant effort. This integration has saved over 154 hours of administrative work, allowing researchers to dedicate more time to their research.
Join us to explore how this seamless integration is reshaping the research landscape and how ORCID is becoming an indispensable tool in simplifying academic workflows.
Do you have an ORCID use case you'd like to share? Submit it for a future webinar: https://forms.gle/BPG8yURYrFmgMTGi8
