Anyone looking for Kōwhai (#Sophora tetraptera?) flowers? Here are some.

I think the little hole at the top is from tauhou (#Zosterops) drilling in to get the nectar as their beaks are too short. Not sure. I’ve heard it happens but never seen it myself as my kōwhai is hard to see from the house.

I put out some cold fat I had collected from various meals, mixed in some breadcrumbs and rolled oats, and made a fairly good bird feed for the tauhou (#Zosterops lateralis) wax eyes.

It wasn’t the right shape for the feeder. I put the bowl on a stool near the feeder and hoped they’d find it. In under a minute they were swarming all over it.

The first bird landed, grabbed a big bit of fat, and threw it into the pool. Whoops! Forgot how messy they are.

Despite fitting through the 25mm wire around the other feeder, the 100mm spacing in the fence bars seems to be an impassable obstruction. They’ll hover, reverse, and then go over the fence rather than through.

To make up for the previous photo which was obscured by twigs here is a tauhou (#Zosterops lateralis) without twigs in front of it.

Breast is a bit over exposed but I think iPhoto did an alright job of making it all look worse.
