I Mulch My Whole Garden for $11 a Year - and It Beats Every Other Mulch

After years of searching I found the perfect mulch for my garden - pine flakes. Let me show you why it's the best mulch.

Here's an update on our Pot-O-Carrots that we planted on 14th April. It's a 12 gallon (43 liter) container and it's coming along nicely although on hot, dry days in needs a LOT of watering. Plants are now well established and tops are all at least 12 inches (30cm) tall. Spacing looks good and have done no thinning. Roots are just starting to fill out, so it will be a while yet before harvest.

This afternoon I up-potted Antennaria plantaginifolia (pussytoes) from winter sown milk jug.

I sowed in late March, last native plant seeds I planted. Wasn't sure what to expect since I've never sown them before. And never so late in spring, without refrigerator cold stratification.

Saw my first-of-year monarch butterfly caterpillar chomping on swamp milkweed (Asclepias tuberosa) leaves in my backyard garden.

At last! We finally had some measurable rain overnight (.32 inches or about 8mm) Things are looking a little better out there as the sun is coming up. It's also supposed to be less HOT today. It's currently 70F / 21C and going up to 79F / 26C. We'll see... Enjoying it while we can. Also finally got the Okra planted out just ahead of the rain yesterday. All that's left now is two more Succession plantings of sweetcorn.

We've had so much lettuce coming in that I gave planted pots of lettuce to my birding friends and neighbors.

When my mail carrier told me they were introducing gardening to their young son, I offered one of the lettuce pots to them.

They politely declined, saying their family rarely eats salad. They're growing fruits: strawberries and blueberries.

BeetBear has a suggestion for what to have with the baked chicken tonight. We can't seem to keep the leaf miners out of the tops, but the bottoms are plumping up nicely. Beet variety is Boro.
