@eryngium BeetBear says: "Well done"!

Ok, it's two weeks since we set the corn seed for the second succession of sweetcorn, so it's time to get it planted out. This time we're covering the planting with our wire fencing tunnels to help keep the foxes from trampling the seedlings. First planting is looking ok, but somewhat ragged from dancing foxes every night. I don't have video of it happening, but the footprints tell the story.

Here's an update on our Pot-O-Carrots that we planted on 14th April. It's a 12 gallon (43 liter) container and it's coming along nicely although on hot, dry days in needs a LOT of watering. Plants are now well established and tops are all at least 12 inches (30cm) tall. Spacing looks good and have done no thinning. Roots are just starting to fill out, so it will be a while yet before harvest.

BeetBear has a suggestion for what to have with the baked chicken tonight. We can't seem to keep the leaf miners out of the tops, but the bottoms are plumping up nicely. Beet variety is Boro.

It's a beautiful day in the neighborhood, so here's a quick tour of where we're at as June begins. Starting at the top of the garden there is an empty space where the Okra will go. Then going down the hill is cucumber, yellow squash, eggplant, green bell peppers, cabbage, beets, lettuce, beans, onions, tomatoes, zucchini, butternut squash, sweetcorn, and at the bottom, raspberries, compost, milkweed and rhubarb. Also BeetBear says hello! 😀

Struth! It's 41F / 5C this morning. At least the damaging winds have subsided. Back to coat-and-gloves weather, I guess. BeatBear says he wants to make it "hot" for whoever sent this cold weather. (Photo from February, 2024)

A red-letter day in our gardening calendar: The FIRST planting of sweetcorn has gone in to the ground. Now we're off to start planting number two. All things going well, we hope to begin harvest in about 60 days.

Took the day off yesterday to observe our 41st anniversary. (Sue, you're still the one!

Today I finished moving last year's compost up to be mulch between the two rows of tomato plants. Now the rest will get mulched if and when material becomes available over the next few weeks. While I did that, BeetBear tended to his beloved beet root crop, which looks pretty good so far!

@malte Yes, the soil temp and how it affects germination is part of it, but also I got tired of crows and starlings pulling up the seedlings and having to endlessly re-sow. Starting in pots gives me better control of each planting and helps with timing each successive planting. Photo from 28 May 2024.

This morning we got the cucumbers (Marketmore 76), zucchini (Dunja), yellow squash (Sunburst), and butternut squash (ButterBaby) started in their seed trays. Okra will follow in a few days. Now I've got to get plants promised to daughter potted up in their planters before she gets here next week.
