Well, after the WIND and overnight cold, everything in the veg. garden is sulking today. I must say, the peonies faired pretty well and are looking good today. It's got more blooms than usual. The tomatoes got shredded and droopy but my hope is for recovery as the weather improves. Gardening by trowel and error! Beware the blue moon!

Struth! It's 41F / 5C this morning. At least the damaging winds have subsided. Back to coat-and-gloves weather, I guess. BeatBear says he wants to make it "hot" for whoever sent this cold weather. (Photo from February, 2024)

At sunrise today the temperature was 49F /10C & wind was gusting to 36mph / 60kph. Here we are at 2:30PM & the temperature is now 48F /~9C and wind is gusting to 38mph / 60.2kph. Here's a look from under the big apple tree. I think we've had tropical storms come through that weren't this windy. Those white totes over the squashes are being held down with full bricks and were STILL moving around. Watch for house sparrow at the end.

Shared great blue lobelia, brown-eyed susan, borage, black hollyhock, and lettuce at today's plant swap. They were popular with other gardeners.

In addition to Sweet 100 cherry tomatoes, I picked up calendula, jalapeno pepper, zucchini, shasta daisy, Aunt Ginny"s purple tomato (heirloom), and Amish paste tomato plants.

At this morning plant swap, one gardener brought over two dozen tomato plants.

Several already had flowers and most had small green tomatoes! The gardener started their tomatoes inside in early March in their laundry room.

I picked up two Sweet 100 cherry tomato plants that were over 2 1/2 feet tall.

Here we are at the end of May, the squash is planted out and everything is set for a good summer season, and then along comes this damned cold wind again. It got down to 49F /10C last night and we're having wind gusts from the north peaking over 36mph / 60kph. Can we not do this please?

Well, now all the cucurbits are in except the Baby Butternut squash. It's quite a bit behind all the others and the germination rate wasn't as good, either. A few more days, I think. Othwrwise we are growing Yellow squash (Sunburst), Zucchini (Dunja), and Cucumber (Marketmore 76). The butternut squash is Butterbaby, a mini-sized butternut type.

Have a lot going on today, but we did find the time to get started setting out the squash. So far, we've got the zucchini and the yellow sunburst squash set out and will try to get the cukes in this afternoon. The baby butternut is not yet ready to graduate.
