Xteink X3, a 3.7inch mini e-ink reader with magsafe

Xteink has started blocking the installation of third-party firmware on newly shipped units, and the reasoning the company has put forward is drawing a lot of skepticism from the community. A customer service reply circulating from Xteink's Taobao storefront confirms the change. The company...
Today's #mayke is a cursed and mostly ineffective minimalist reading light for the #Xteink #X4 e-reader.
It runs on an ESP32-C3, which means the USB-C port only runs in JTAG mode - so no possibility of pulling power from it.
HOWEVER, you can get ~1mA of 3.3V off of the D+ pin, which is juuuust enough to dimly light a single red LED.
This means you can have a reading light powered by the device, although this is an entirely cursed way to do this, and hardly enough to read by.
More #XTEink news - this Reddit thread that contains a message from the company to a customer, seems to suggest that it won't be an issue for overseas units? (i.e. in the US, if you buy from China from the website, you're okay? maybe?)
I'm not sure why the company would do it this way so I'm taking this with a big grain of salt, but current sales might be okay?

Hey #XTEink folks - I keep reading that the new units don't let you flash anything? As in, you can't install CrossPoint? I'm tempted to grab a backup unit now from Amazon, as I'm reading that the ones shipping from China already don't work. But ones in stock other places should still be the "old" ones, at least for a little while.
EDIT: See comment below this - Reddit thread suggests maybe "overseas units" are fine?
