Finally got KOReader running on my Kindle because fuck Amazon. It is usable once more! And it has a miniflux app, so that solves the RSS reader question for me.

Another note in my occasional quest to make my post-Amazon Kindle a worthwhile e-reader:

Can anyone recommend a #KOReader plugin that will make things look nice AND is *explicitly* designed for non-touch Kindles?

I've tried a couple of plugins and they've been close to bricking my device because (a) they assume that every device has a touch-screen, and (b) they assume that no device has physical keys.

My device has no touchscreen, so any plugin that assumes no physical keys means that half of the UI changes are just dead space on the screen. One plugin I tried resulted in not even being able to get past the welcome screen because it wanted me to 'swipe' in order to do so.

The person making ZenUI kindly responded to a request and added basic functionality for keys, but it's still unusable because the thing that underlines the book you're 'hovering' over only works intermittently, so most of the time it's anybody's guess which book will open when you click.

For the moment I'm still stuck with a phenomenally ugly e-reader experience 😔

@acallegaro Ahh neat feature, file types can be associated with koreader. Then opening such files ie.: epub, mobi (or other pdf) from #PocketBook software will open them in #koreader (even if set to automatically re-open book on device wake-up/power-on)

I feel like I've got a blog post a-brewin' about retiring my Nook Glowlight 2 for a jailbroken Kindle Paperwhite 2 with #KOReader.

It might end up being two posts, once I've worked out how to set up #Wallabag on a #RaspberryPi 3B+.

Not Psion, but definitely #permacomputing.

@acallegaro I went ahead and it was just connect via USB, copy two #koreader folders, eject #PocketBook, in UI -> Apps -> koreader to start it.

Really simple and works all fine :)

Just installed KOReader app on my Pocketbook Verse.
The gain in speed (inside of books) is amazing. 🚀

Or see official guide here:

Also I hid all the icons of all the apps I am not using.

Installing KOReader on the PocketBook Verse Pro [2025]

Boost your PocketBook Verse Pro reading experience with KOReader: faster highlighting, instant dictionary lookup, and smoother file handling. Here’s how to install it in 2025

@acallegaro Not really, so far I’m happy with stock software on it.
What are the adventages of #koreader?
One big one that I can see immediately is the one that koreader is FOSS :)

It seems it should be easy to install koreader on #PocketBook and it doesn’t need any jailbrake.
Based on quick glimpse into this instructions:

Installation on PocketBook devices

An ebook reader application supporting PDF, DjVu, EPUB, FB2 and many more formats, running on Cervantes, Kindle, Kobo, PocketBook and Android devices - koreader/koreader

#koreader feels like emacs, kind of user hostile at first, but once you persist and try to figure out what it can do, you want it.

Reading much more on it, than I did paper books.

Still haven't figured out how sync things across to the device. Will probably use rsync/Dropbox…

Cool toy & good to read on, not just epubs but also badly scanned PDFs.
