So I decide I will attempt the #Gentoo   install on my #Thinkpad #X230T :t-pad: this weekend . Will hold off before I try it on my main desktop since that the center piece of my amin setup. I did not wanna really do a VM first because all of the setup would be for not. I figure the X230T is a good starting point since it gets used about 12 hours or so a week at dialysis. Kinda exciting to actually learn a new distro being a #Arch  / #Fedora   user for years.

If anyone has any more tips or advice I am all ears.

@Natanox @wyatt8740 @ChrSt @tauon @ika

Several Reasons:

  • They are getting harder and harder to come by, espechally my #X230Tablet.

  • As they become more and more of a collectors' item, they become more and more sought after and more expensive (I have a #Vaio #P11Z that I used before that so I know this won't be a road I want to go down)...

  • I've already maxed out it's current capabilities (minus adding a #BDXL burner, sacrificing WWAN for a 2nd [mSATA -] SSD and shoving in the biggest 2,5" SSD on the market) and the bottleneck is the i5-3320M (or any said generation Intel CPU) soldered to the mainboard.

  • I know some chinese modders aka. #nb51 released a custom drop-in mainboard but that used an i5-8550U but not only is that also quite old but I've not found any listing for it on any shopping site back then and even then it would've been economically unfeasible.

  • I need new batteries but the original have #DRM amd #Lenovo doesn't make any new ones.

  • A 1080p screen would be nice given it's 768p pen+touch screen didn't age well but that mod doesn't work for the #X230t and has a shitton of issues as I know from @fuchsiii 's #Lenuwu #UltimateX230...

  • Sadly all the machines on the market, even the @frameworkcomputer feel like a substantial #Downgrade in that department and demanding too many compromises in non-negotiable departments...

    Like #ToolfreeSwappableBatteries or a 9,5mm Ultra Slimline ODD bay being missing...

    @wyatt8740 @ChrSt @Makura I guess the island keyboard of the #X230 & #X230t didn't win you over then?

    @[email protected] @[email protected] @[email protected] @[email protected] Agreed. I've yet to find any good replavement for my beloved #X230Tablet or just a regular #ThinkPad #X230 because noone makes an #UltraNav-Style #Trackpoint or even offers a wired (!!!) usb keyboard with it - #Lenovo killed the last one that wasn't some #wireless garbage shortly after they introduced that double-the-price wireless one... I guess I've to learn how to 3D model and -print then... https://github.com/KBtechnologies/NUCbook

    @krutonium @laptopretrospective @emma @frameworkcomputer

    Except there is #DRM in the #Batteries because "F**k the consumer"!!!

    And no, #Lenovo canceled support for the #X230t long ago...

    Kevin Karhan (@[email protected])

    @[email protected] @[email protected] @[email protected] precisely. Add to that the #Enshittification by #Lenovo with #DRM in #Batteries so swapping cells won't fix them... I guess I've to actually get some money together so,I can make a #NUCbook prototype and do a #Kickstarter with it... https://github.com/kbtechnologies/NUCbook And yes, I do plan to use #LiFePO4 cells because they do live longer, are safer and are more practical in daily use woth partial (dis)charges, but since the charging is indepensent from the internal system, theoretically anything that does 12V DC can be used as (rechargeable) battery...

    Infosec.Space

    @laptopretrospective @emma Personally, I think the #Enshittification is real and tilty-swively screens don't have to suck.

    After all, they could've cut costs by simply designing the cases to use more of the same parts and only differenciate where necessary...

    I love.my #X230t and sadly I've yet to find any #laptop on the market that isn't a #downgrade compared to it.

    Yes, that includes the @frameworkcomputer / #Framework laptop because they don't offer a #UltraNav-Style #Trackpoint nor #WWAN-Modem / 2nd SSD option and espechally no toolfree-swappable batteries!

    In fact, toolfree-swappable and removeable batteeies are non-negotiable essential for me!

    👢 Came back after half an hour and (for no logical reason) tried again...and this time it booted up! (Only till BIOS, because no drives connected yet)

    🔍 On inspecting the board, I see a burnt-up SMD called "C588", which I'm assuming is a capacitor

    📖 No circuit diagram for my motherboard (#Thinkpad #X230T) but the diagram for a similar(ish) model (#X230, the non-tablet version) seems to say C588 is part of the voltage regulation circuit, in parallel with a couple of other capacitors

    🧵 2/3

    @arcade @frameworkcomputer OFC I've to agree with that.

    On top of that, I'd not recommend to buy some vintage hardware for productive use.

    But if your budget is tight, consider some refurbishers that do take stuff serious and offer tested hardware with warranty for a cheap price...

    Granted, the #Framework does come with good battery life out of the box whereas a used laptop "comes with a battery" but may last even less than my #X230t's old battery...
