Consumerism - a true story.
A friend of mine bought an automatic coffee machine after a colleague told her "it'll change your life". But after a while she decided she didn't want it and gave it to me. I tried it and also didn't want to keep it. I offered it for free to several people. No takers. Now it is on the side of the main road with a sign on it saying "FREE coffee machine. It works!" A similar machine costs over $500 new.
I already knew that consumerism makes people buy things they don't really want. Maybe it's a huge block of chocolate, maybe it's $70,000 Tesla. So I shouldn't be surprised. The physical object itself is not the point, it's the emotional confection of the consumer ritual.
